Hello, and welcome to my online portfolio. My name is Brittany DeSalvo and I am graduate of Purdue University. I graduated in May 2011 with a B.A. in Professional Writing and a minor in Anthropology, with Liberal Arts Honors. In the summer of 2014, I attended the Summer Publishing Institute (SPI) at New York University. Additionally, I volunteered at Book Expo America for the International Digital Publishing Forum in May 2014.
I am currently employed at Nature Publishing Group, a part of the Macmillan Publishing Company. Working as a Production Assistant, my main duties are to create and check flatplans for NPG’s academic and review journals using Proteus software, traffic ads for numerous journals (including all U.S. academic and research journals) using adDEPOT, & perform checks of journal files before print. For Scientific American magazine, I create the dummy book for use by production, sales, finance, marketing and editorial to determine appropriate placement of advertisements and editorial content so they are not in conflict.
In my spare time, I work as an editor for TheNerdyBomb, a family-friendly nerdy website that debuted in early 2013. I have contributed to Comics Grinder, another nerdy website focused on comic-related news and reviews, as well. I also contribute articles to Silver Spork News, a food blog that debuted in 2014, as well as curating their Instagram.
Besides my current position, the most valuable experiences I have had in publishing have been working at the Purdue Writing Lab as a tutor, at Indianapolis Monthly magazine as an editorial intern, and as managing editor for TheNerdyBomb. These experiences have taught me how to more effectively interact with people, both in person and over the phone, and how to work effectively as part of a team. As a result of these opportunities I have extensive experience with creating style books, effectively using SEO, running social media such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, fact checking, copy editing, and tutoring.
My personal interests include reading, SCUBA diving, studying science and marine biology, traveling, and other adventure sports. In terms of genres, nonfiction is where my passion really lies, especially within food, travel, humanities, and the sciences. I also read quite a bit of young adult and genre fiction, including mystery/thriller, fantasy, sci-fi, and romance. Some of my favorite authors include Steve Alten, Preston & Child, J.K. Rowling, Gail Carson Levine, Tamora Pierce, and Nora Roberts.
